The maker ecosystem is witnessing a transformative leap forward with the launch of the mAkE MOOC. This free online learning platform equips individuals and organizations in the maker ecosystem with tools and resources to be sustainable. By connecting European and African makerspaces and fostering collaboration, this platform is set to redefine how makers innovate, network, and build capacity.

The mAkE MOOC offers a variety of courses, a variety of courses structured to guide you through and understand your makerspace capacity to influence policy, how to create sustainable business models for your creative practice or digital innovation hub, how to build new ventures.

On January 23, 2025, the mAkE MOOC hosted its anticipated launch webinar, introducing the platform to a global audience. The event highlighted how the mAkE MOOC supports digital innovation, skill building, and job creation through an inclusive learning environment. The mAkE MOOC’s kick-off webinar drew participants from across continents, with sessions in English and French that accommodated +90 total attendees within the two.

The webinar, hosted by Jessica Guy, Therese Minffih, and Samuel Boadu Duah for the English session and Julia Danae Bertolaso and Thomas Hervé Mboa Nkoudou for the French session, provided an engaging and interactive introduction to the mAkE MOOC platform. Participants were introduced to the mAkE project and its accomplishments, followed by a guided tour of the platform’s features, courses, and tools. The event also included interactive discussions where attendees could share ideas and explore the platform’s potential. An open Q&A session rounded off the agenda.


The platform offers courses in key areas such as policy, technology, business, and innovation. The courses highlighted in the webinar were:


  • Accessing Markets: This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how to engage with local markets by sector and with relevant innovation and research ecosystem entities such as standards bodies, regulators, tax offices, and policymakers.
  • The Common Policy Agenda: Focused on the role of makerspaces in promoting sustainability, innovation, and global development goals (SDGs). You will learn how makerspaces contribute to local and global progress and how to advocate for policies that support them. The course also provides strategies for analyzing and implementing key policy recommendations while exploring the challenges makerspaces face and proposing solutions for their future growth and scalability.

These courses blend video lectures, written resources, and interactive activities, catering to diverse learning styles.

The feedback from the launch webinar was highly positive, with participants commending the platform’s design, user-friendliness, and content relevance. They also offered constructive suggestions to enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and the overall user experience. Additionally, many participants expressed a desire for more time to explore the platform fully, which would enable them to provide comprehensive feedback.
